This morning I came across an article written by Jessica
Bruder @jessbruder that I found fascinating.
I have never spiraled into a depression as an entrepreneur and I
certainly have never considered suicide, but I have experienced the feelings
that accompany entrepreneurship; such as feeling alone, inadequate, and
fear. I believe all of these emotions
accompany even the entrepreneurs with the strongest emotional
intelligence.
The article in Inc. Magazine written by Jessica Bruder is
titled The Psychological Price of Entrepreneurship and it is a must read. You can find it here.
I have found my own path as an entrepreneur but I have also gotten
through a lot of uncertain times and debilitating fear at times as a result of
some of the articles I have read and blogs I have come across. I believe as entrepreneurs we often feel so
alone in our journey. But, we are not
alone. It’s important to keep up with
the struggles of other entrepreneurs as it offers hope.
I have had so many situations where friends, family and
other well intentioned people have asked me about the business and when I try
to explain to them certain situations or the struggles that accompany
entrepreneurship, they often don’t understand and are quick to make the
assumption that now may be a good time to quit, or if it is such a struggle,
why do it. The comments and questions I
have had to field about my own company from people who have no knowledge on
what it takes to start and grow a business can be very frustrating. I have to constantly remind myself that they
mean well, and just don’t understand. I
often turn these skeptical concerns into a challenge. To work even harder to prove to these people
that despite the uncertain times, there will come a day where I can go to each
of them and better explain the challenges that accompany entrepreneurship and
how I’ve overcame them.
So, please take a moment to read Jessica’s article on the
psychological price of entrepreneurship.
You won’t be disappointed.
Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend!
